It is distinguished by its strategic geographical location, situated within the Mesopotamian Plain, and traversed by the Tigris and Maghreb rivers. It also boasts vast expanses of marshlands, considered among the most important natural environments in Iraq.

Maysan's historical roots trace back to ancient civilizations. It was part of the Kingdom of Characene during the Parthian period, and the region was known for its commercial activity due to its location on ancient trade routes. The governorate includes important archaeological sites such as Tell Abu Shabeika and Tell al-Dhahab, as well as sites dating back to the Sumerian and Parthian eras.

From a tourism perspective, the Maysan marshes are among the most prominent natural landmarks, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are renowned for their environmental beauty and biodiversity, in addition to floating villages, reed houses, and traditional mashhuf boats. Amarah is also famous for its traditional markets and its musical heritage known as the Maysani style.

Maysan is characterized by its authentic tribal culture and the generosity of its people. Its economy relies on agriculture, buffalo breeding, and fishing, in addition to containing important oil fields, making it a governorate that combines **history, nature, and economic resources**.
